ABSTRACT

At the end of 2019, China exploded COVID-19 and mushroomed rapidly throughout every nation. Due to the information received by the media, this message has spread somewhere in the minds of the people. Covid-19 is a complicated, difficult to treat, or horrifying disease. Although the severity of symptoms and the lethality of the virus directly causing the disease cannot be ruled out or ignored, but somewhere, the negligence of the imbalance in the nature of the basic elements of the body is the reason for the fatality of this disease. According to Aacharya Charak, "there can be hundreds of alternatives for the pathogen of any disease," but "this body is the only option for pathogens to cause hundreds of diseases." Which is why this should be the major focus for treatment in any stream of medical science and Ayurveda is a science of 'ayu', meaning harmony of health and life or journey of healthy life. This reveals that there is a high opportunity to evaluate the range of relevant drugs available in the Ayurvedic that may be employed more rationally to complement each stage of the disease. The Ayurvedic literature provides no explicit mention of this illness but according to the similarity of symptoms despite the occurrence of diseases, there is a special outbreak of Vata and Kapha. This disease can be reconciled in Janpadudhwansh janya diseases, Visham jwara and Vatshleshmic jwara.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: Obesity is a rising pandemic in childhood. There is scarcity of evidence on the efficacy of yoga in achieving weight loss in overweight/obese children. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of family-based comprehensive yoga intervention in the reduction of body mass index (BMI) in overweight/obese children, in comparison to standard dietary and lifestyle counselling and control group. Methods: This was an open-label randomized controlled study. Children aged 8-15 yr who were overweight or had obesity were randomized to one of the three arms for 18 wk; standard weight management (group 1), yoga with dietary modification (group 2) and control (no intervention; group 3). Reduction in BMI and improvement in physiological, biochemical and psychological parameters from baseline to 18 wk was compared between the three arms. Late follow up was also done at 6-12 months. Results: A total of 165 children with mean±standard deviation (SD) age of 11.6±1.8 yr and mean BMI 26.3±4.2 kg/m2 were enrolled. Outcome analysis at 18 wk was performed for 109 children. Improved diet quality and reduced intake were observed in both intervention arms. The median (IQR) reduction in BMI in standard and yoga arms was similar [?1.4 (?3.1, ?0.5) kg/m2 and ?1.2 (?2.3, ?0.6) kg/m2, respectively], while it increased by +0.3 (?0.3, 0.1) in the control arm. In the yoga arm, mean systolic BP reduced from 118 (10) to 114 (8) mmHg, (P=0.019). In the standard arm, significant improvement in psychological scores was noted. In group 3, the mean fasting glucose increased from 93±10 to 102±12 mg/dl (P<0.001). Interpretation & conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest that yoga in conjunction with dietary modification is equally effective as the standard weight management for BMI reduction in the paediatric age group.

ABSTRACT

To study the CT-scan changes in brain in patients of tuberculous meningitis and their correlation with stage of disease and its outcome.A prospective, hospital - based, clinico - radiological study of one year duration including 48 pediatric and 44 adult patients. 50% of patients in the stage I had normal CT-Scan and this proportion decreased to 10.53% in stage - II and 6.67% in stage III. A normal CT-scan is associated with complete recovery in 72.22%, partial recovery in 16.67% and death in 11.11% of cases. Abnormal CTscan is associated with advancing stages of disease and a poor outcome. CT-scan is a valuable tool for diagnosis and monitoring the progress of cases of tuberculous meningitis.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: The use of epoxy resin membrane as a support for immobilization of enzyme has resulted into improved sensitivity and stability of biosensors for uric acid, ascorbic acid and polyphenols. The present work was aimed to prepare an improved amperometric biosensor for determination of serum cholesterol required in the diagnostics and management of certain pathological conditions. Methods: Epoxy resin membrane with immobilized cholesterol oxidase was mounted on the cleaned platinum (Pt) electrode with a parafilm to construct a working electrode. This working electrode along with Ag/AgCl as reference and Ag wire as an auxiliary electrode were connected through a three terminal electrometer to construct a cholesterol biosensor. Results: The sensor showed optimum response within 25 sec at pH 7.0 and 45°C. The linear working range of biosensor was 1.0 to 8.0 mM cholesterol. Km and Imax for cholesterol were 5.0 mM and 9.09 μA, respectively. The biosensor measured serum cholesterol. The minimum detection limit of the sensor was 1.0 mM. The mean analytical recoveries of added cholesterol in serum (2.84 and 4.13 mM) were 91.4±2.8 and 92.3±3.1 per cent (n=6), respectively. Within and between assay coefficient of variation (CV) were <2 and <4 per cent, respectively. Biosensor had a storage life of 6 months at 4°C. Interpretation & conclusions: The use of epoxy resin membrane as a support for immobilization of cholesterol oxidase has resulted into an improved amperometric cholesterol biosensor. The present biosensor had an advantage over the existing biosensors as it worked at comparatively lower potential.
